Waxed Field Tote — I

Description

An open tote with nothing to fasten, which is the point when both hands are full. Fourteen-ounce duck in natural, waxed at the mill, cut and sewn here. Fifteen by thirteen by five inches, about 16 liters, and it stands up empty because the base is doubled. The handles are vegetable-tanned hide, twenty-four inches long for a nine-inch drop, set on solid brass rivets that pass through both the handle and a reinforcing patch. No lining, so you can see the stitching and repair it. The cloth starts pale and darkens wherever a hand grabs it. Knock the dust off. Cold water on a mark. Wax it when the creases turn white.
