Mesquite Folding Knife — I

Description

Mesquite reaches us as straight offcuts from a firewood yard in the South Valley, air-dried a year and stabilised before it is cut into scales. It is dense, close to chocolate with black streaking, and hard enough that it barely dents. This is the plain version: a 3 1/8 inch drop-point in CPM-154, hand-rubbed satin, on a slip joint with a strong backspring. Closed length 4 1/4 inches, weight 4.8 ounces, brass pins through stainless liners. The blade is ground flat from the spine, which sinks further into rope or a melon than a hollow grind will. No lock and no clip. Wipe it dry, oil the joint, and keep the mesquite well away from a dishwasher.
