Around the 45 mm case sits a knurled bezel that turns in detents every two degrees, with an index line filled black so a heading holds while the lid is shut. The card is damped here, sealed in a fluid-filled capsule that stops the needle swinging on a rough walk. The case comes off the lathe polished bright and goes out bare, with a 30-inch brass belt chain hooked to the lanyard eye. It runs 1.8 inches across and 6.8 ounces with the chain on. Bright brass browns faster than brushed. Wipe it dry after a wet day so the detents stay clean.
