Description
A 21-inch square of combed cotton, printed one block at a time on the bench off Mountain Road. The cloth is 3.4 ounces a yard, woven at a small mill in North Carolina, light enough to knot small under a collar. One carved block, one earth pigment, in a repeating star taken from a pressed-tin ceiling on Central. Registration is done by eye, so no two squares land the same. Edges are turned twice and stitched at an eighth of an inch. Wear it at the neck, wipe a lens with it, or put it over a cup in blowing dust. Wash cold and hang dry. The pigment softens across three washes, then holds.
