Cut 1.25 inches wide from a single 9 oz length of harness leather out of a small tannery in Berks County, Pennsylvania, taken down the back of the hide where the fibre is tightest. The solid brass center-bar buckle is held by two screws through the fold, so it can be changed without cutting a stitch. Seven holes at one-inch spacing. Edges are bevelled, dampened and burnished, and the russet is the leather’s own colour rather than a dye. Sizes 30 to 44 even, measured from the fold to the middle hole instead of by trouser size. Harness leather is stuffed with tallow and wax and wants conditioner rarely. Hang it, do not coil it.
